It is hard to believe it is already August. Soon the weather will be getting cooler, and kids will be going back to school. This month we will give you some advice on how to keep your companion happy and healthy during all of these changes.

If you have children, you know this time of year can be very busy. Your schedule will be changing dramatically once they go back to school, and less time will be spent at home and with your companions in general. It is important to still spend time with your cats and dogs, no matter how busy you are, to lessen their stress level.

If you are not already, now is the time to start feeding their breakfast and dinner at times which will fit well with your schedule once your routine has changed. Regular feedings now will help to ease the transition later this month when things get hectic. If you can, it is a good idea to start taking an early morning or after dinner walks. Those times will most likely be more conducive to your school schedule, and getting your dog used to them now will also help lessen stress levels.

Set aside some time for yourself and kids to play with your cat and dog after school. They will be happy after a long day to see their kids come home, and it has been proven playing with our companions helps to reduce our own stress. Going outside to play fetch, go for a walk, or playing with a toy mouse are all great ways to spend quality time with your cat and dog, get exercise, and have fun.

While you are away all day at work and school, it is a good idea to have something to keep your companion’s mind occupied. Even cats can get bored at home alone all day. Kongs are a great way to give your pup something to keep them busy. Fill them with treats and it will not only occupy your dog’s mouth but their mind as well. There are also a lot of toy options for our feline friends. Anything with a ball or toy mouse inside that your cat can bat around and chase is a great way to keep them busy and happy. We also carry music boxes called Pet Acoustics at the hospital which are a wonderful way to help your companion feel calm all day. They are preloaded with music and tones specifically made for either cats or dogs. We use them in the hospital for all our appointments, drop off appointments, and surgical procedures. We have noticed great results, the cats and dogs love them!

This time of year you may also notice your companion is itchy, has redness or dry skin, or may even develop ear infections. With the changing weather, allergies can not only be a bother for us humans but your companion as well. If you think your companion is suffering from allergies, we can help. We have many options to help bring them relief, such as shampoos, conditioners, and various medications. Call us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Scott, and she can give you advice based on what she finds on her exam and diagnostic tests.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about the health and well-being of your companion call us at 719-481-3080.
